The Board of Assessment Review (BAR) is the hearing body for Chili tax payers who seek to file grievances regarding the assessment value placed on their property.
Upon completion of the formal hearing process, the BAR has the authority to accept or deny the tax payer’s grievance. Upon accepting a grievance, the BAR members are then authorized, under Real Property Tax Law, to set a new assessment on a property.
Members of the BAR are appointed by the Town Board and meet general requirements; they must be a Chili resident, and have general knowledge of property values in the community.
The BAR is comprised of five members, appointed to five-year terms, with one temporary member appointed for a one year term.
Formal BAR hearings are conducted annually by appointment. Assessment grievance/complaint forms are available in the Assessor’s Office or online here after the filing of the Tentative Assessment Roll, May 1st of each year. See Assessment Department for more information.
Scheduling of appointments are conducted by the Assessor’s Office after May 1st, appointments are made as completed complaint forms are returned, so early filing is encouraged. Grievance Day (4th Tuesday in May) by 8 PM is the last day property owners may file a formal complaint seeking reduction of their tentative assessment. All meetings are open to the public.
